Uncovering hidden flavors in our communities

Anywhere you seem to find yourself in the Denton County or surrounding area in this rapidly growing landscape will lead you to a Mexican Restaurant. I’m always of the mind that “more is more” when it comes to any kind of restaurant as I have the deepest respect for all humans who have the courage to step out into the wide unpredictable world of restaurants, and the art of running them. As I do not care to cook Mexican cuisine myself, much preferring to leave that to the experts, Mexican restaurants are one of my favorite and frequent places to find.
I especially look forward to the comfort and familiarity of crispy chips, and the heavy earthiness of a bowl of guacamole.

One still and hot late summer evening found me at Dos Mezclas in old downtown Aubrey. I enjoyed the drive out to this small town and had heard good things about this small family run place that calls itself Nuevo Latino Fusion, and I was ready to see what was on offer in the way of the famous green vegetable from the south.
The description on the menu was a little bit underwhelming, but the service in this small space was warm and cheerful, and the chip basket arrived almost before I was seated, so I placed my order of “Fresh Guacamole -Large”, and a Coke, and waited to see what would find its way to my table. The wait was minimal, even on this busy night, and I was served an attractive bowl of fresh chunked avocado, with Pico de gallo, Fresh cracked black pepper, and Lime wedges. It looked fresh and colorful so I squeezed the limes, grabbed a chip and dug in!
The flavor of the dish hit at different times, like a well picked guitar. The soft chunks of avocado with their smooth creaminess, the fresh, crunchy ingredients of the Pico, the bite of the pepper, and the pucker of the lime all married together for some very satisfying guacamole pleasure!

I enjoyed the whole bowl, while I sipped my Coke, and relaxed in my corner of the small booth I was seated at. My server was quiet and soft spoken, I think sensing that I needed downtime and peace! She returned just as I was popping the last bit into my mouth, and took my order for a Laredo Special, rice topped with onions, bell peppers, house made queso blanco, and a choice of protein, which in my case was strips of steak grilled medium rare. An all-around satisfying dish that complemented the guacamole I started with perfectly!
If you find yourself in the Aubrey area, look up this little gem, and be ready to enjoy Dos Mezclas fusion!
