Uncovering hidden flavors in our communities

A dark, chilly night way down in the fall found me on the hunt for something different for dinner. I wanted an adventure, and I found it at Hashtag India. The moment I walked in I was immersed in India! From the hum of a different language to the smells of the different spices, to the Bollywood film clip dancing across our heads, I knew I had found my something different.

I had gone without prior research on the restaurant, so not knowing what to expect, I headed to the order line. Nothing looked familiar, so when I ask the sweet young lady working what she would suggest, and she said chicken?, I promptly nodded yes! She asked me how spicy I wanted it and I wisely said medium. I added an appetizer from the prepared foods on offer to my right, and pointed out a dessert offered on my left, added a drink, and happily took myself to a table to await my order.
My name was called out in very short order and I went to collect my Jalapeno Chicken, and Mirchi Bajji. Both were very good! Mirchi Bajji are fried, spicy stuffed green chilies, a popular Indian street snack. The Jalapeno Chicken was tender, and very spicy! Then came the call for the main dish, Butter Chicken with Rice and Garlic Naan. The chicken was tender and favorable with the garam masala taking center stage on this dish. Garam Masala Is an Indian spice made from the mix of Cardamon, cinnamon, cloves, cumin, coriander and black pepper. This results in a mix that has a warming effect rather than intense heat. It was very slightly sweet, and the sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the garlic naan! Plates aren’t used here, as this is more closely offered as Indian Street Food, but you can ask for them, and they are cheerfully provided! I ended my meal with Butterscotch Cake, a very light cake with whipped frosting, the perfect way to cool down my taste buds!

There was so much more on offer here, and it would take many trips to sample the very large menu. My advice to myself on my next trip? -research the menu, plan for the spiciness of the foods, and absorb the experience again!
