Uncovering hidden flavors in our communities

Written by: Elizabeth Knox

The one thing that you can always count on when you are on a food discovery drive in our area is finding hidden gems! And I found not one, but two!

I was out and about on a late Saturday afternoon when the urge for something indulgently sweet took hold. I had heard rumors of a small little trailer that was scooping up great ice cream with creative add-ins in the middle of the small town of Tioga called Scoops and Sweets, so I headed up Hwy 377 to check it out. I pulled up to find a small retro blue trailer set back from the street with picnic tables, shade umbrellas, and corn hole at the ready.

It took me a hot minute to read through the menu, each sundae sounding more mouthwatering than the last. I was stuck between the “Pie in the Sky”, Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel, and the “Reese’s Explosion”, Ice Cream with a ton of crumbled Reese’s, and Chocolate Syrup. It’s very hard for me to pass up Apple Pie, especially a la Mode style, so I put in my order and got ready! Boy, did that sundae hit the spot! The ice cream was terrific, it could totally stand on its own, no other toppings needed, but paired with the crisp crust, and tangy tartness of the apples, topped off with the Caramel, and my mouth was dancing in delight!  I scraped the dish clean!

While I was devouring my sundae, I have to admit I was eyeing the cute little pizza shop, Geno's Pizzeria next door. I always like to have my next meal planned, so I ask the helpful gal behind the window about them and was given strong thumbs up, so after my ice cream I walked on over to take a pie home for dinner. There is no inside seating at Geno’s, but that didn’t stop the steady stream of folks pulling up for a pie. It was a

great choice! I ordered the Geno’s Specialty, their signature pizza, with Red sauce, Mozzarella, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Green peppers, Mushrooms, Black Olives, and Jalapenos. Even after the ride home, the pizza was fresh with a crispy crust. The sauce was just the right amount to set off the toppings, with enough Mozzarella to hold it all together!

If you're out and about for a food discovery of your own, be sure to head to Tioga and try Geno’s Pizza Scoops and Sweets Ice Cream!
