Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County:
Polo Promises Justice and Healing for Abused Children

Stacie Wainscott

Experts estimate that “1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls will be sexually abused before the age of 18.” Given this national statistic, in 2009 alone, the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County (CACDC) served 125 clients from the local cities of Aubrey, Little Elm, Oak Point and Pilot Point. The statistics are real, the stories are real and the hope these children will find justice and healing is also real.

The Advocacy Center works with law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, Child Protective Services, and medical professionals on the investigation and prosecution of severe child abuse cases in Denton County. The CACDC is a child friendly place where children and their non-offending family members come to receive services needed for their situation, such as interviews, crisis intervention, sexual assault medical exams, therapy and counseling and referrals for medical services. In 2009, this United Way partner agency interviewed 671 children from Denton County and the surrounding area who were suspected of having been sexually abused. The agency also provided 8,500 free counseling services to over 600 children and family members.

In an effort to continue the fight against child abuse, a local fundraiser, Polo on the Midway organized by the Ladies Polo Auxiliary of Texas, will be held on October 30, 2010. If you have never experienced a live polo match, mark your calendars. All ages are welcome for this casual family fun event.

More information about this upcoming event will be posted at www.cacdc.org. If you are interested in sponsoring this event, want to set up a vendor booth, or want to volunteer contact Stacie at stacie@cacdc.org or (972) 317-2818 ext. 244.
